Shortly after the American entry into WWII in the early 1940’s the United States began to ration its food in order to support the war effort. This simple act of national solidarity would in turn create a new industry. One began in shadows that would take decades to become public knowledge. The Human Salvage Program (HSP) was to some a simple example of supply and demand and to others the advent of the most inhumane act society could commit upon itself.

The HSP would take its cue from the War Gardens (or victory gardens as they became known) of WWI. Appealing to citizens’ patriotic duty to do their part Americans began growing their own food not on farms but at their homes and in public parks to both supplement their rations as well as to increase domestic morale and a feeling of contribution to the war effort.

During WWII the War Garden would return. Much in the same manner as it had appeared in WWI. However its return would spark an idea in two young men. The human race would be forever changed. These two enterprising young workers in a meat processing facility in Springdale, Arkansas would use the example of the war garden to pioneer the development of Human Originated Meat (HOM) to serve as a filler for rationed animal products. This would create an economically viable, renewable resource to extend not only their business dollar but also the dollars of the american public and the government of the united states of america. This would become a massive economic and morale boost for the country in its engagement in conflicts of unprecedented magnitude on the multiple fronts of WWII.

HOM, though its origins were kept secret at the time, would go on to become an intrinsic component of the then blossoming industrial food distribution network (schools, hospitals, prisons, etc) throughout the 1940s to the present day. In 1972 the true origins of HOM would become common knowledge. Although there was a mild public outcry when the information initially went public, this was soon overshadowed by public fatigue from the relentless causalties in vietnam as well as the re-election of President Nixon. In the years since, HOM has been linked to not only fiscal prosperity for its producersand distributors it has also been connected by contemporary cultural anthropologists, politicians and everyday americans to, among other things, a significant decrease in economic disparity, homelessness and general crime.
