The United States entered the second world war on Dec 8, 1941. As food rationing set in during 1942, Americans of all walks of life were called upon to do their civic duty and cultivate their own war gardens.

By 1944 20million US based war gardens were producing over 8 million tons of food.

John W. Tyson and John Baugh were working together in a meat processing facility in Springdale Arkansas. With the US rationing meat, the two men were strategizing ways to not only boost production at their own plant but to find a means to stretch their product further. Creating the illusion of surplus at a time of shortage. By the end of the war in 1945, the utilization of HOM, spearheaded by Tyson and Baugh was contributing approximately 4% of the supply of meat product to american troops, schools, hospitals and prisons.
